MLB Draft: Official Order, Event Details, Rankings
Details regarding the 2021 MLB Draft have been cemented over the past month, including an official draft order.
It was already pretty well understood that the order would be based on 2020 records, but MLB made it official earlier this month. Therefore, the Pirates have the first pick with a 19-41 record. The Braves will pick 24th with a 35-25 mark. That’s one spot higher than their first selection this year, when they popped Jared Shuster at 25th overall.
Bonus values are frozen for 2020 and 2021, so slots will be worth the same as this year’s draft. The first pick will again be worth $8,415,300. The Braves’ 24th pick will be worth $2,831,300. They gave Shuster an underslot $2,197,500 bonus at 25th overall this year.
Another rule change for the 2021 draft is first-round exemption of pick forfeiture because of free agent compensation. The only way the first-round draft order will change is if a team exceeds the luxury tax by $40 million. It’s safe to say the Braves won’t be losing their first pick.
The draft will be held July 11-13 as part of All-Star festivities in Atlanta. The move to July in conjunction with All-Star Week was widely accepted as a great change for the event and sport. Instead of being an independent event that clashed with college baseball’s schedule, it will now share the spotlight of one of baseball’s biggest weeks and should gain more attention.
